A little R&R time after dinner

Notice how neither of them is actually looking at me? Can you tell the TV is behind me?

Daddy donut day!!

{I like how Deacon gets a donut and Zac is stuck with cheerios... and it appears as though Zac isn't too happy with the idea either.  Gee daddy... maybe Zac could at least get a muffin!!!}

10 on Tuesday

1. Damien and I did a body fat percentage screening at a health fair this week.  His was lower than mine.  I had a fit.  The ladies tried to talk me down, but it didn't help.  I don't care if women are supposed to have a higher body fat percentage than men... I still think it SUCKS.  And don't tell me it's because "women have boobs"- I won't even go into that one!!!  It SUCKS.  End of story.

2. The Mercury Retrograde is also really getting me down... Google it.

3. Zac's first official word was "up."  Deacon's first official word was "ball."

4. Zac's first official sign was "all done"- same as Deacon!

5. Damien has conversations with me in his sleep- and they always result in him getting indignant with me... and it's so confusing because I never know if he's awake or asleep... it doesn't help that I'm half asleep when all this is going on either.

6. I put Deacon into a lottery at the Spanish Immersion school-- he's nowhere near being at the top of the wait list... which is good since it further proves that he's meant to be where he's registered.  But it still made me a touch sad that we weren't called... I'm totally into the whole Spanish Immersion form of learning.

7. Today as I was walking in the rain and cold I decided I never want to move back to Ohio... unless global warming really takes over.  It doesn't help my decision when my mom tells me how nice it is outside- when it's a "lovely" 40 degrees and overcast.

8. Zac gets downright MAD when we don't let him take a bath with Deacon... we essentially give Deacon the choice of taking a bath with Zac or not.  Sometimes he says no, sometimes he says yes.  Tonight he said no... which resulted in Zac having a panic attack.  He would not calm down for anything and sat in his tub sobbing.  Finally Damien took him out of the tub and he ran into the other bathroom and nearly flung himself in the tub with Deacon... Thankfully Deacon is pretty nice and let Zac get in.  All was then well with the world.

9. Today I dressed Zac in Christmas jammies and matching Christmas slippers to wear to school.  He looked so funny and cute... the teachers all laughed and thought that Damien must have dressed him today.  HAHAHA!!!

10. For the first time since Damien and I got jobs at different Universities our travel schedules overlap... we'll both be out of town on the same date.  Thankfully our schedules only overlap one day... and even better, our daycare provider/good friend is pretty amazing and said she'd pick up the slack for us ;-)

Flowers

I LOVE flowers... but we never get them since I feel like that they're a waste of money.  But, this gorgeous rose was from my good friend Lisa's house... and the bouquet of flowers was from the farmers market- for $5!!!

{Deacon was a bit jealous that I wasn't taking pictures of him, LOL}

Deacon hates cheerios

Deacon absolutely HATES cheerios. Hates the smell more than anything. He will not come near anyone eating cheerios. He seriously panics if he gives you a kiss after you've eaten cheerios and didn't warn him.
So, imagine the horror, tonight, when we forced Deacon to pick up some Cheerios that Zac threw all over the floor.
{please ignore the messy house}

Deacon's favorite activity...

... taunt Zac from behind the baby gate.  It's just LOADS of fun.

A new round of teeth

We JUST finished teething two top molars a couple days ago... I thought we would at least have a week off.  But nope.  Zac has been chewing on everything and has a low grade fever at all times... thankfully the grumpalump attitude hasn't caught on quite yet (at least no more so than usual).  Poor kid is just walking around with anything and everything in his mouth.  The issue is one molar on the bottom- his gums are swollen and there's a little hole that's starting.

I was thinking about it the other day... I swear, if adults had to deal with teething we would be on some type of heavy pain med.  But kids have to go through it with a measly dose of tylenol and/or motrin.  It sucks!

Fun in downtown Sacramento

We went to a kids health fair today downtown... met up with a few friends, walked around, ate dinner, had fun.  It was a gorgeous day and the kids had a great time enjoying the weather.

* I love the picture of Deacon getting his face painted... he was VERY serious about the ordeal.

*The picture of Lisa holding Zac is also a favorite... he could not get out of her arms fast enough- and was pretty mortified that she and Greg would even attempt to hold him in the first place.  Oh the life of an overly anxious baby.  He loves to flirt, laugh, talk, etc... with anyone- but do not try to hold him.

We love a parade... and hats

We went to a parade in Davis the other day... and the boys had a really great time.  Neither boy freaked out by the loud noise- which was surprising.  Deacon got a handful of cool swag from it too... a definite plus.

As I mentioned in my 10 on Tuesday post below, Zac is all about being the class clown... and he's all about hats right now.  His current favorite "hat" is a mixing bowl.  He wears it all over the house and gets upset with us when we take it off for dinner or bedtime.  He also really likes that it makes us laugh at him... he gets the silliest grin on his face.

10 on Tuesday

1. I worked out with a personal trainer for almost 2 years... and she was HARD.  I've been working out at a gym for more than 3 years now.  I have never thrown up during any of my workouts... until today.  I did a Boot Camp class.  On top of throwing up I also fell over while "shuffling" side to side.  I can manage to stay on my feet during yoga, pilates, hip hop, etc... but put me in a Boot Camp and I'm a mess.  I'm SO going back next week.

2. I went to the doctor on Monday to check on my kidneys.  The pee test was inconclusive... so I had to go in for an x-ray.  The x-ray was inconclusive as well... which is obnoxious... but on the phone my doctor said it was inconclusive because there was "stool" in the way.  I turned into a junior high boy and could not hold back my laughter.  I think I make my doctor uncomfortable.  And I also think this has become way too much information than most of you bargain for with "10 on Tuesday."

3. Zac has become the class clown at school.  He'll start yelling and flinging himself all over the place during reading time... when he's in his high chair he'll wave his hands in the air and throw food... or he'll put on hats and start yelling... It's comical and he loves the laughs it gets.

4. We've never had a jealousy issues with Deacon since Zac came along... until now.  Deacon never minded the "cute baby" attention Zac received... but when Zac gets the attention of people laughing and saying how funny Zac is, you can tell Deacon is jealous... which makes him act out to get extra attention- mostly he's trying to be funny... but he doesn't think before he acts so he'll do something inappropriate like throw a toy across the room while yelling like Zac.  He doesn't get why it's funny for Zac to do it and not for him.  And I'm not sure how to deal with this one... thankfully it's not that big of a deal though.

5. Tonight Deacon said he didn't want a birthday party or a birthday gift... all he wants is to buy Grandma a ticket to come back to California- and he wanted that as his birthday present.  My God he knows how to pull at those heart strings.  To make matters worse he then kept asking about Grammy, Grumpy and Grandpa- and if they could come to his birthday party.  He even went so far as to say those were the only people he needed to invite.  sheesh.

6. I went to an all you can eat sushi lunch today... I don't remember the last time I ate so much food... it was amazing.  And I even tried new things.

7. I cannot get over how much I love Glee.  It's not just one of those shows that I enjoy watching because it's cute, mindless, funny, etc... I really get into it.  I think the show is filled with great messages that apply to everyone.

8. Damien is in a beer club... and he's been an active member for about 2 years.  And in these two years he has not brewed beer one single time.  He blames it on lack of time.  I don't buy it.  I want him to brew more because I know how much he loves it... despite the fact that I cannot stand the smell of brewing beer.

9. Damien is an officer in said beer club... he's the Treasurer.

10. I simply cannot imagine life without two boys... even though it's exhausting and frustrating and somedays by noon I am counting down the hours until bedtime... I still love it.  When I was pregnant with Deacon I so badly wanted a little girl.  I actually cried when I found out he was a boy.  But when he was born it all changed... and when I was pregnant with Zac I found myself feeling like I should want a girl - but in reality one of the only reasons I wanted a girl was because I loved the girl names we had picked out... oh, and the girl clothes.  But I just love being a mom to boys.  One of my two best friends from high school come from an all boy family... and they adore their mom- I remember in high school being so amazed at how much they just loved their mom (not that we all didn't love our moms... but it was different with these boys).  And as I've grown up I've found that nearly all boys that come from all boy families are like this.  I obviously give this way too much thought... LOL.

Ohio In Da House!

(and please ignore the hair and face... I just got home from boot camp- but I was sick of my mom bugging to take a take picture of me in my birthday present!)

Fun with photobooth

I'm so fortunate that with my photo taking obsession I ended up with a kid like Deacon... a total ham for the camera.  He may not sleep well... but he makes up for it :)  Don't you just love the safety goggles?  He calls them his "cool glasses."  Me thinks he acquired Damien's sense of style.

10 on Tuesday

1. When I laugh I snort... a lot.  To the point where people stare if I am laughing really hard.  My Grandma Gerold used to snort when she laughed- so it always reminds me of her when I do it.  And as I get older the snorting gets worse.

2. Whenever my mom and or dad leave after visiting for an extended period of time I wish we lived in Ohio.  It's truly the only time I ever wish we lived there again.  Sure I miss it at other times... but leaving my parents and seeing how sad it makes Deacon breaks my heart.

3. When my mom sneezes it could wake up the neighbors.  It is so loud and drawn out... I don't know how she does it.  It's a talent like no other.

4. Zac needs to figure out this sleeping through the night business... stat

5. The other day Deacon asked me a question about the poles in the North Pole.  So I asked him what poles he was referring to... and instead of explaining to me which poles, he, instead says to me- "mommy, a pole is a tall cylinder."  How does he know what a cylinder is???

6. I laugh when people fall or hurt themselves (no, not if they're really really hurt... just like if they trip and fall... something like that)-- and Damien gets SO mad at me for this.  Just the other night Zac beat Damien over the head with a wooden spoon, which made me laugh... and then I got yelled at.

7. We have ants.  I hate ants.  Deacon thinks they're fun.

8. Another reason I hate when my mom leaves is because it means that by this time next week we won't have any clean laundry.  My mom does laundry obsessively... and Damien and I both hate doing laundry.

9. On June 2 Deacon will have his first piano recital.  His song choice consists of 3 notes... C, D and E.  The song goes like this: C-D-E  C-D-E  C-D-E  CCC  So... who wants to come???  Let's hope admission is free.

10. My mom loves making up songs... she's been doing this since I was little.  They are the strangest songs, but they get stuck in your head like no other.  The funny thing is that out of every song the kids know and hear... most of the time they prefer these songs that my mom sings.  Titles include: "It die-dee changing time" (translation: It's diaper changing time), "I love my Grandma and my Grandma loves me," "I love you ba-ba's, oh yes I do."  The list could go on and on.  They're all sung ridiculously off key with overly exaggerated dance moves.  At least she doesn't sing "I like cheese in the morning" to the boys... she saves that for Milo the dog... and and Milo also gets the classic, "Milo, the big help dog."

And of course, your 10 on Tuesday picture... nakie bo-bo boy.

How did I get so lucky???

Seriously guys... how did I get so lucky as to have two sets of insanely talented parents???

On my side you've got my mom- who is obviously talented beyond belief... you've all seen her sewing projects, and know she's an excellent baker.  Then you've got my dad- who could win awards for the work he does in his yard... and he's also a great writer and he's where I get my musical talents- though I don't know that anyone would ever know that or guess that.

Then on Damien's side of the family- you've got his mom and dad who do amazing art... his parents paint things for my boys and they turn out beautifully.  My mother in law does most of the painting, but my father in law does a bunch of it as well... and my God I can't even begin to tell you how great their work is.  My mother in law is a retired art teacher so she has an entire portfolio worth of stuff she could show off.  My father in law works as an accountant... and while it's not a form of creativity that yields pretty paintings and art projects, it's sure a creative talent in this economy, LOL.

So anyways, I'm feeling pretty blessed tonight- I can't wait to see the creative things my boys can do... with all these good genes, they've got some high standards to live up to ;-)

Grammy's Most Recent Masterpiece

From Grammy's art studio to Deacon's room!! His new favorite work of art!  Deacon is so excited about his new painting from Grammy, he just couldn't wait for us to hang it in his room.  So it's hanging in our living room right now because there were already nails in the wall and he wanted it up right away.  He's so proud of his collection of art from Grammy... and I couldn't be happier either!

Thanks to www.random.org for helping us randomly pick a number... and no, my mom did not pick her favorite comment- even if I would have let her it would have been too hard... though I do think she favored the comments that said how pretty she is.

So, without further ado... the winners!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO DAWN & MAGGIE!!!

Maggie- please email me... I don't think I have your address anywhere!!!
(Dawn... no need to send me your address, LOL)

"And how does one till?"

Our yard was looking pretty rough... so I decided Damien would spend the weekend fixing it.  My mom and I went to Home Depot yesterday to get supplies and ask questions- mainly because everytime I asked Damien how we should go about re-planting grass in our backyard he would say things like, "it's nearly impossible to do it..." or, "it's going to be too expensive..."  So I gave up on listening to what he had to say and decided to go ask my good friend Michael at Home Depot.  Now, I had never met Michael up until yesterday- but I think we both felt the connection.  He's a good man.  Anyways, Michael taught me all about sodding... but he kept mentioning that we would have to "till."  And I finally asked Michael, "so how does one 'till'?"  So he explained that to me too- but by that point I was so done listening... and decided to just go home and relay all the good news to Damien.

Re-sodding the yard is not too hard, nor is it expensive.  Hooray.

So today, as luck would have it, Deacon's little friend, Martin, came over to play... so the two boys and Damien spend the morning and afternoon in the backyard digging holes, tilling and planting cilantro, basil, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers and a few other things.  Good times.

... and look who was 'helping' Grandma sew some more birthday signs.  This little boy was MAD that he wasn't outside helping the big kids.  Grandma and I listened to a LOT of yelling and crying today.  Mr. Grumpalump is still paying us a visit.

My very first GIVEAWAY!!!

Ok, I've never done this before but thought it could have two outcomes:
1. It could be super fun, with lots of people participating and someone could win something really fun...

OR

2. No one comments and makes me feel like the only people that read my blog are my mom, Aunt Chrissy & Regina.  {which I know isn't true since this month alone I've already had over 100 unique visitors to this site... just my own little pat on the back- makes me feel like less of a loser}

SO!  Here's the deal!

I found an adorable birthday sign on etsy the other day and wanted to copy it... there were a lot of them so it's not as if this is some unique idea here.  It didn't appear to be too hard to make so I presented the idea to my insanely talented mother who also loved the sign.

You see, we're big "birthday sign" sort of people... as indicated here.  So this is perfect for us.

My mom came into town last week and we went to the fabric store and found some great fabric at some amazing deals... and at this point (a week and a half later) we not only have one birthday sign- we have many.  And we have one that we haven't claimed as a gift for friends... so we decided to give it away to my loyal fans blog readers.

So how do you win this adorable birthday sign???

Just leave me a comment!!!  Oh... and it has to be something along the lines of how wonderful my mom is.  She made that part up... in fact, originally she wanted it to be a contest- whoever leaves the most flattering comment about her would win the sign.  I suggested that maybe that would be a touch too biased- and we should use a random generator... but that people could still leave lovely comments about her.  She finally gave in agreed.

Ok people- get to it.  You have until Sunday night around the time that I go to bed... so let's say around 10 p.m. PST.  Don't make a fool of me- COMMENT!

{this picture doesn't do it justice... it's a rather large sign and so cute.  the larger picture I took didn't turn out so well, so this is what you get.  Let's not be picky here... it's a giveaway.}

Fine print:
You cannot win this contest if:
You are my husband
Your name rhymes with Latie Shangville
You are my father
If I have absolutely no clue who you are and you creep me out

The winner will be selected at random... I will post the winner on Sunday night along with my email address.  Said winner should email me address and we'll ship the sign the next day

"mommy! take my picture!"

... I'm going to act like a cool baseball player-- take my picture now!
{cause all the cool baseball players wear tye-dye :)}

10 on Tuesday

1. I have serious control issues sometimes... for instance, last week when Damien was in charge of 10 on Tuesday I had a hard time with it.  He did a GREAT job, but an hour after my surgery I was suggesting that maybe I could just do it instead of him.  LOL.

2. Damien has been working so hard on this iphone application and I'm so proud of him for it.  He's been wanting to do something like this for a long time so I'm glad he's finally gone ahead with it.

3. I'm on a mission to find more iphone app ideas for him... my friend Dawn and I are constantly thinking of ideas- we thought of a few good ones- we just need to actually sit down and get serious about the details though.

4. Zac is absolutely amazing us the past few days with his walking... today he even stood up from a sitting position with no help- and started walking!!!  I can't believe he's really got it.  It's bittersweet... but I'm trying to focus on the sweet part- he's so proud of himself.

5. Deacon is going through the phase where he doesn't want to sleep alone... and once again told me he wanted a "real man" to sleep with him the other night.  He always says this after I tell him that he's not alone- he has his stuffed animals... and he always looks at me like I'm absolutely the dumbest person ever and says, "mommy- but I want a real man to sleep with!!!"  Hmmm...

6. Ms. Tanier is doing a show and tell at school in the next couple of weeks... I have never seen Deacon more excited.  I don't even know what to compare it to- because he is just THAT excited.  It's funny listening to him try to figure out what he should take.  My mom suggested that Deacon take her... and he said, "Hmmm... maybe I should take my Legos instead."  HA!  Gave us all a good laugh.

7. I am beyond excited about Glee starting up again next week... I watch the trailer every single day in anticipation.

8. My mom was playing with the Elmo puppet tonight and Zac thought it was hilarious... until my mom put Ernie into the mix (you know, Ernie of Bert & Ernie?).  Zac was terrified of Ernie.  Can't say I blame him.  He looks kinda creepy.

9. Sometimes I meet people for the first time and I feel like I've known them my entire life.  In the past 6 months I've met a few different people at various events... and it's so odd to think I've known them for such a short amount of time.

10. I feel like this weeks 10 on Tuesday is kinda lame... but I'm blaming it on two things: pain meds & me forgetting it was Tuesday (and therefor doing this at the last minute).  I know there are some of you who are probably completely shocked that I was forgetful about something... but you know, I can admit my faults.

And because no post is complete without pictures...

Other fun Easter happenings...

He is such a walker!!!  It's amazing how much he's taken off in the past couple of days... he's taking a lot more independent steps and walks everywhere he can.  He can make it about 10 or so steps now.

The boys fight over this ball... it is Zac's, but Deacon loves it too. Zac must remember all those moments Grandma and I spent on that yoga ball when he was a baby and colicky... when all he liked to do was be bounced and "shhhh'ed"  Oh the memories.

We needed to get these boys out of the house today... and so we bundled them up and took them on a walk in the rain and cold.

{and by "we" I mean, "Grandma and daddy" took them on a walk}

Happy Easter!!!

This Easter was so much more enjoyable than last Easter.  Zac was pretty grumpy, but manageable... I just feel so bad because he's teething, but my goodness- it's exhausting!!!  So Zac is making it a tradition to spend Easter crying as much as possible ;-)

Deacon woke up at 6:30 and was beyond excited to see all the eggs that started at the door of his room and lead downstairs to where his baskets were hidden.  He found all 3 of his baskets in a matter of 5 minutes... I guess next year the Easter Bunny needs to do a better job hiding them.  The Easter Bunny heard that Deacon isn't a huge fan of candy so Deacon got a bunch of new Legos, a t-ball set and coins... along with the token chocolate bunny and random jelly beans here and there.  Zac got a bunch of new balls and a new car... which he played with all day long.

The highlight of the day was when we found the Easter Bunny hiding Easter eggs in our backyard.  Oh my gosh Deacon was beside himself.  It was so funny.  The kids got to love on the bunny for a little bit before she had to move on to the next house... Deacon was sad that Grandma had to miss the bunny- unfortunately Grandma was taking a nap when the bunny was here.  Dang!

My favorite picture is this first one- you can see my mom in Deacon's room trying to get out of bed... she was fast asleep when Deacon woke up and found all the hidden eggs and came to wake us up.  Deacon and my mom had a sleep over last night... lucky Grandma!

Well, it's early bedtime for both boys.  The goal is 7:30 for everyone under 5.
