10 on Tuesday

Okay, here goes my big debut writing the '10 on Tuesday'
  1. I love giving my boys their bath together. It is so nice to see Deacon play so nicely with Zac... and Zac looks up to his big brother so much.
  2. It was supposed to rain today... alot. I was actually kind of disappointed when the sun came out. Is that weird?
  3. I'm married to an awesome woman... awesome in many ways. Today's particular way is the way in which she handled this surgery. Just like all of her others, bravely and calmly. I've never had surgery, but I'm pretty sure I'd totally flip out. Wow.
  4. Word of mouth really does work. Both of our cars had prepaid maintenance plans which recently expired. Someone in my office said he really liked his mechanic so that's where I went. He's awesome: fast, thorough and honest. If you're in the Davis area and need car work, check John out at Triple A Automotive.
  5. I've got an awesome job. I like what I do and my work is appreciated, I really like the people I work with. I get a chance to travel for work, but not too much. They're amazingly flexible when it comes to family care time too! I rarely miss working from home for IBM.
  6. Life really does laugh at you when you make plans. As many of you know, Amanda and I are on a huge crusade to rid ourselves completely of debt. We recently put together a budget that accounted for (what we thought was) every last penny. Since then? Several hundred in car repairs and another several hundred in dental bills. We can pay them... but it's back to the drawing board for the detailed budget.
  7. I'm going to try to lose 10% of my body weight over the next 3 months. Just sayin'.
  8. I so can't wait to go visit family this summer!... Yes, I am looking forward to Ohio in July. Call me crazy.
  9. I'm finally working on writing an iPhone app. I'm not telling you what yet since there doesn't seem to be anything similar in the app store yet and the moment I publicize my idea there will probably be 50 of them. Suffice it to say, I'm having fun writing the application.
  10. Ten on Tuesday is hard! I'm glad Amanda's going to be back at it next week!

Going in for surgery... leaving Damien in charge

It's somewhat scary... but I'm leaving Damien in charge of the 10 on Tuesday (the March 30th edition) while I have surgery tomorrow.  I was thinking I might write it out tonight and publish tomorrow... or I would write them while doped up on pain killers... and I don't like either of those two options.  So, since Damien wants to be helpful, he's in charge.

Wish me luck... the next time I post I will be gallbladder-less. Fantastic.

How much fun can 5 people have with a hula hoop?

Daddy's home!!!

I love the reaction... it's one of the best parts of being a working parent... coming home to this...

Grandma's Here!!!

I don't know that my two boys could have been any more excited that Grandma picked them up at school today... it was a surprise!  Deacon was floored.  All along we knew Deacon would be excited but we were pretty sure Zac would be apprehensive... and it would require a bit of time to warm up to her.

{well, I guess we were wrong...}

And then the big little boy needed to get in plenty of snuggle and play time with Grandma... he isn't used to sharing her... and he did a great job being patient while Grandma tried to figure out how to give her attention to two very needy boys.

Toenail Cutting time!

Growing up I HATED getting my nails cut... my mom did a HORRIBLE job with it.  Seriously she was not gentle and it hurt so badly.  So I swore when I had kids I would do it gently and they wouldn't grow up traumatized (at least not traumatized by toenail cutting).
Fast forward to when I do have kids... I just rarely cut their nails because it scares me and Damien does it.  Well... Deacon hates it as much as I did as a kid.  He acts as though Damien is amputating his toes.  So I took pictures of it... mainly because Zac's reaction was as funny as Deacon's.

Awesomeness

A few years ago I met someone online... no, not from a dating service... from a message board for mommies!  Caryn would post pictures that she was taking and I fell in love - from her style and creativity, to her editing... everything about her pictures amazed me.  I knew I wanted her to shoot my family.  But life happens- and we just never got around to meeting.

After Zac was born I knew I wanted to make it a priority for her to get my beautiful boys on {digital} film... but as I've said before, I'm super picky about when and where I do professional shots.  I never do professional shots "just because"- mainly because I like the pictures I shoot of the boys and don't want to pay someone else to do it.  But I felt as though Zac's 1st birthday would be a great opportunity for us to have some professional shots done... and Caryn was the first person I thought of to call.

After years of knowing each other online we finally got to meet in person... and it was GREAT!  I couldn't have asked for a more patient and kind photographer... when I was about to lose it with Deacon she took him off of my hands and got him to calm down and SMILE... and she did so happily and with such grace.  I  was thrilled to learn that she's not always as patient with her own kids-- because let me tell you, I wasn't feeling very "mother of the year" like during family picture day.

I could seriously go on and on about Caryn... but I'll leave you with this- if you're in Northern California and want someone to shoot your kids or family (and by shoot, I mean photograph...), call Caryn at Eikon Photography.  Not only does she do an amazing job- she's affordable.  I have paid more money to go to Sears and have our picture taken... and the pictures weren't nearly as good and the experience... well, let's just say the experiences at Sears is incomparable to my experience with Caryn.

So, you want to see some of the pictures???

Visit Caryn's photography blog for a sneak peak (yes, a sneak peak... meaning, she took SO many more pictures... this is just a taste of what's to come):

10 on Tuesday

1. MY MOM IS COMING TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Can you tell I'm excited???

2. Tanier and I are on a mission to conquer X-Bike (Cal Fit's take on Spinning)... so far it's conquering us.  But that will change soon enough.  As for now, I hurt.

3. My children slept until 7:30 the other day I swear to you I thought they were both dead, hurt or sick.  I woke up at 7:20 and laid in bed having an internal panic attack until I heard Zac throw his paci out of his crib (signaling to us that he was ready to get up) and then heard Deacon stumble out of bed.

4. Deacon has recently become REALLY proud of Zac.  Up until now Deacon has essentially ignored Zac... but lately the littlest things can get Deacon so excited-- "Mommy!  Look!  Zac claps when I clap!"  "Mommy!!!  Zac screams when I scream!"  "Mommy!  ZAC CRAWLED" ("yes Deacon... he's been crawling for quite some time now... but I'm proud too buddy").  I can't begin to explain how happy this makes me.

5. I've got my gallbladder surgery scheduled... one week from today!!!

6. Every year I get really excited to start a garden... despite the fact that the majority of things I grow are things we don't really enjoy eating.  Case in point: tomatoes.  But the thing is, Deacon loves to see our garden grow and help water the garden... and I do too!  So we take a lot of veggies to neighbors and friends when we can actually grow things.

7. Damien watched a video of a friends little girl at Chinese School (she was BEYOND cute and reciting a poem in Chinese... or was it Mandarin???) and now wants to send Deacon to Chinese School. Can you picture it???  I can, and it makes me laugh so hard.

8. We just started a new system with Deacon and the money he earns (from extra jobs, gifts, etc...)- he has three jars for his money... Spending, Savings, Givings.  We took all his cash/coins and spread it out on the floor and I asked him how much he should put in each jar.  He truly understands what each jar means... and he chose to put the most money in the Givings jar.  The boy is amazing.

9. I want to get my chin pierced.  I think Damien would divorce me if I did.  I also think my mom would try to take my children away from me.  And my friends might disown me as well.  Overall, I don't think it would be worth it.  LOL

10. I could really go for some Thai food right about now.  And cake.

Teething baby

Poor boy... he's getting two teeth in and they are really putting him through the ringer today.  I took him to the peds today because of the fever and how lethargic he was acting- and she confirmed it was probably just him teething.  I had him home with me all afternoon and he was pretty miserable... but he did cheer up a bit when daddy and Deacon got home.  Why do kids do that?- act whiney and miserable with mom, but around daddy, they act differently???  Oh well... it was nice to see him laughing.

Damien's new shirt

Damien and I cannot stop laughing at this shirt... we were SO excited when we got it in the mail yesterday.

10 on Tuesday

1. I forgot to charge my ipod last night, despite the fact that I knew I would be driving 2 hours to the Bay today (and that's 2 hours IF there is no traffic)... when I got in the car and realized that sad fact I seriously cried.  Then I made fun of myself for crying over an ipod.  But I was still upset.

2. Ever since I met Damien and he introduced me to the wonderful world of WOOT! I have been obsessed with the illustrious bag of crap (BOC).  I have said for years now that all I want from Damien is a BOC... and guess what???  This past week he got me one.  I honestly believe that the universe was waiting for the perfect time for me to get this... and what better time for me to get my first ever BOC than for my 30th birthday?  Now, I'm assuming most of you don't know how much of a big deal this is... it's a HUGE deal.  Go ask any geek you know.

3. I think the birthday cake Damien made on Sunday night will be finished tonight.  I love that cake so much and I hate having to share it.  LOL

4. Tonight when I asked Deacon his favorite part of the day he said it was when they went to the park at school.  We had this conversation at dinner, so when I was tucking him in tonight I didn't feel like I had to ask him the same question again.  As I was leaving he got kind of upset with me and said... "mommy, aren't you going to ask me what my favorite part of the day was???"- so I apologized and asked him.  And he said, "my favorite part of the day was when I got to snuggle with you."  Oh my gosh I love him. (though I hear him upstairs in his room right now playing, even though he should be sleeping... I need to just keep replaying our loving conversation over and over in my head, LOL)

5. I told Deacon that his long hair makes him look like a ragamuffin... and he says that I'm wrong-- he looks like a rat.

6. Whenever I tell Deacon "no" he stomps his feet, rolls his eyes and says, "MOM! You NEVER let me!!!"  Oh the drama queen.  Where does he get it from?  I then proceed to explain to him that he must not understand the true definition of the word "never"- which of course he denies.  Then we end up in this huge discussion about whether or not he knows what the word "never" means... until I finally realize how ridiculous it is that I'm having this discussion with him!  Ugh, he's just like his daddy...

7. Zac is an amazing eater... I seriously had no clue how amazing it would be to have a child who will eat most anything you put in front of him.  Sure he has his picky nights- but for the most part, he'll try anything and more than likely will eat it all.  Maybe this is the norm... but after dealing with Deacon for all these years, this is heavenly!!!  (again, where does Deacon get his pickiness???  I'm stumped)

8. I love the smell of my house after a full day of having all the windows open.  And it doesn't get that smell until it's later on in the evening and dark... I can't explain it, but I love it.

9.  Zac is doing this super cute thing now... when you pick him up he pats you on the back and says "awwww!!!"  It's probably the cutest thing ever.

10. Being 30 seriously feels different than being 29.  It's so bizarre, but it does!!!  I don't feel OLD... but I do feel more adult-like.  Everyone is making fun of me about this... but come on!  30 sounds older than 29!!!  And yes, I know it IS older than 29... but when someone says they're 28 it doesn't make them sound that much older than if they were to tell you they were 27.  But if someone says they're 30 it has a totally different vibe than if they said they were 29!!!  STOP JUDGING ME!  Despite how crazy I may or may not sound... I seriously LOVE all of my friends and family for making my birthday special.

******

And what's a post without pictures??? (worthless if you ask my mother)  Zac LOVES music- so this toy is an absolute favorite with him since it plays music everytime you press a button, open a door, open a window, etc... In these pictures he would open the window and then sit back, clap, rock side to side and say "baahhhh baaahhhh" over and over again.  Way too cute.

Actual Birthday

So yesterday was Amanda's actual birthday. Having spent the entire weekend celebrating, we played it low key. Besides, neither of us was feeling that well. A nice Thai lunch and after the boys were in bed, we shared Amanda's favorite birthday cake, chocolate cake with her grandma's recipe caramel icing. Yum. (and of course, Amanda had to document it with a photo!)

Edited by Amanda:
And yes, we're eating cake in bed.  It was my birthday, I was tired and ready for bed... but still wanted cake.  So Damien brought me cake in bed.  Most people want breakfast in bed... I wanted cake in bed.  And Damien wasn't allowed to complain about the crumbs.  He's a good man.
