Deacon & Daddy time

Deacon & Damien got to experience their first ever live professional basketball game this past weekend!  For his birthday, Deacon's little friend, Mason, had his "party" at the King's game... the kids (and some parents) got to sit in the lower level, dine on fine concession stand cuisine, and even run out on the court after the game.  Deacon (and Damien) had a BLAST... and he is now a huge fan of the King's- which is quite unfortunate seeing as though his mommy & daddy aren't big sports fans, LOL.

I get real sick of our friends having such cool birthday parties... I mean, how am I supposed to top this???!!!  Good thing there aren't any sporting events happening in Sacramento around the time of Deacon's birthday ;-)

I simply cannot believe that today is the last day of November... this month (and year, for that matter) has flown by.  We have so much for which to be thankful... and this entire month has been a reminder of all of those things.  Even in the frustrations, I have found reasons to be thankful... and I don't know if it's the spirit of Thanksgiving, or if I've just been fortunate enough to have that kind of month-- where I'm able to have perspective and an odd sense of peace {most of the time}.

When we moved to California in 2005 I worried about holidays... Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and birthdays-- they're all so meaningful to me.  Growing up holidays were a big deal.  I wanted the same feelings of happiness and "family" for my kids... and being so far away from our entire lives, I was so unsure of what the holidays would look like for us.  Our first Thanksgiving in Sacramento I was so grateful that we were invited to Dawn's house for dinner... and every subsequent Thanksgiving/Easter/Christmas we have had multiple offers from friends to join their celebrations.  This is not anything we take for granted... and each year we are thankful to have such amazing friends- who are more like family to us now.  This year we went to Joline's house for the first time ever (well, we've been to her house, just not for Thanksgiving)... and as always, had a wonderful day.  The kids had a great time playing and the adults had a great time eating and watching parades and dog shows :)

I love the holiday season... and even though I miss my family and friends back East, I am thankful for our California home.

And because no post is complete without a picture... I'll give you more of a sneak peak into our 2010 holiday card.  Which, by the way, is another thing I am thankful for... thankful for good friends who are photographers and do an amazing job with photoshop... who are willing to work with us at the last minute

Happy Black Friday!!!

One of my favorite days of the year... Black Friday.  I have been doing Black Friday, to some degree, every year since I was a kid.  My dad was a big fan and always took me along... though when I was younger my favorite part of the day was our trip to McDonald's for breakfast before we hit the mall.  Well, times have certainly changed since then... now a days, by the time McDonald's opens for breakfast, I'm done shopping!

Well this year was certainly one of my favorite black friday's yet... Dawn and I have this down to a science- and we seriously rock when it comes to our black friday partnership.  Black Friday will never be successful if you go alone... and the more dedicated and focused your partner, the better.  Dawn and I work great together and we finished our night/morning feeling SO accomplished- but exhausted!

Our evening started around 9:30pm when we made the final decision to meet at Walmart... after a very successful shopping excursion, I headed to Old Navy & Toys R Us... and ended my night (well, morning) getting a few things online (some stores had their door busters online with FREE shipping).  I went to bed around 3:30am and was out the door again at 7am to hit up Walgreens, Michaels & Bed Bath & Beyond.

I got home around 8:45am and stayed on the couch until after naptime... thankfully all 3 of my boys were well behaved and let me get some sleep.  After everyone woke up, we pulled out our Christmas tree and put up the lights.  We're all pretty sleepy today, and Zac is feeling kind of feisty so that's about as far as we got... Deacon is dying to get up the ornaments, so I'm sure those will come soon!

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving AND Black Friday :)

Kindergarten Assembly...

Each school day at Carden begins with an assembly lead by the different grades.  A student in that particular grade will stand in front of the school and lead the students in prayer, meditation, pledge, states & capitals and the Carden song.  On Friday, the entire class will get on stage and recite a poem or sing songs...

This week Kindergarten was in charge of assembly... and today (being the last day before break) the kids got to get on stage and sing 3 songs.  {Oh, and by the way... it was crazy hair day today}  My favorite song was sung to the tune of "Hokey Pokey"- and it was about a turkey... so funny.  Deacon did SO much better this time around and actually sang without turning around and getting shy.

Ummm... and it was FREEZING.  Seriously FREEZING.  Yes, and when I say that, I mean it- 32 degrees!!!!!!!!!!  Insane.

Happy Thanksgiving {Carden style}

Today I was lucky enough to be a part of Deacon's very first Carden Thanksgiving Feast... and it was so cute.  The kids had such a good time... and the Turkey Cupcake creation {picked out by Damien} was a HUGE hit with the kids and room parents.

I am so incredibly thankful for Carden... we could not have chosen a better school for Deacon and our family.  It fits us perfectly.  Deacon is happy, he is learning and, most importantly, he is having fun.  The kids in his classroom are wonderful and we adore the parents... I don't know that a day goes by that Damien and I don't say something about how lucky we feel to be a part of this community.

Have I ever mentioned...

... that Damien sews?  Like, really well, even.

I approached him a few days ago with a challenge... sew outfits for the boys.  I couldn't find anything at the stores that fit what I was going for... and when I searched the bargain bin at Joann Fabrics, I came across some lovely material that would be perfect.  Damien gladly accepted the challenge and got to work on Friday night... and finished both pieces on Saturday evening.

Good work baby!!!

I don't plan on posting the reason we needed these lovely garments... however, I will post a picture of mine, which I purchased at Walmart (surprised?)

And lastly... this is my new favorite "Zac look"-- I'm sure the look had nothing to do with the outfit Damien made him, or the outfit I had to borrow from his little friend, Allison.

Time at the park...

Damien, Deacon and I all had off school today... so we took Zac to daycare and spent the day doing "big kid" stuff.  We went shopping, out to lunch and then to see Megamind 3d (not my favorite).  Definitely a fun day... and Deacon LOVED having mommy, daddy and {especially} Grandma to himself almost all day.  After the movie we picked up Zac and headed over to the park to enjoy the nice(r) weather...

Grandma is back!!!

My mom is an absolute angel for us... a little over a week ago I called my dad and mom in a huge bind.  Both Damien and I were going to be out of town for work a lot this week and we had no one to watch the boys before and after school... I thought of almost every option, and the only one I was comfortable with was offering to pay for a plane ticket so my mom would come back.  With no questions asked and no making me feel bad, she said she would come for however long we needed her.  And thank goodness she's here... we honestly could not have done this week without her.  We are so fortunate... thank you, mom {and dad for "letting" her come}!!!  The boys are absolutely unaware of how much Damien and I have been gone this week!

Voting in style...

{Damien's shirt brought to you by Woot!}

Today I took Deacon with me to vote... and it was a really neat process to explain to him.  I told him how special it is that we get to vote- that we haven't always had this privilege... though I immediately realized my mistake- white men have always had the opportunity to vote in this country.  So I told him that women used to not be able to vote... and that people with different colored skin (other than white) used to not be able to vote either.  He was shocked.  He said, "mommy, that makes NO sense!!!"  I told him that I wasn't making it up... and he still didn't believe me.  I told him that our society still discriminates against people- and, again, he didn't believe me.  I absolutely love that he sees our world so beautifully... that everyone he meets is equal and deserves respect... I know it won't always be this way- that someday he'll learn that I'm telling the truth... and with all my being I pray that he will continue to see everyone as equal and fight for equality the way Damien and I do when we vote.

Happy Halloween!!!

This year for Halloween we went over to Dawn & Cory's house for dinner, followed by Trick-or-Treating at Dawn's mom's house... The kids were AMAZING- Aiden and Deacon were beside themselves... and I was incredibly impressed with how well the little ones did.  Zac LOVED Trick-or-Treating... I was shocked with how much he loved it.  He loved his costume and loved seeing the others in their costumes.  It was so sweet.

After Trick-or-Treating we went to Sacramento Waldorf's Pumpkin Path... and it was beautiful.  I was surprised, this morning, when Deacon woke up... instead of talking about his candy and costume, he talked about the Pumpkin Path.  Unfortunately I didn't bring my camera... which was a-ok with me- sometimes it's really nice to be camera-free :)

{oh... and Zac's Pirate costume?-- worn by me when I was a baby and also by Deacon when he was a baby-- made by my mom}

Making 'Mummy Dogs' - doesn't Zac look thrilled? LOL!!!

The Demain's take Sacramento (VERY picture heavy)

This past weekend we were SO excited to have our friends, Kristina, Chris and new baby Isaiah visiting.  Kristina and I have known each other since kindergarten and have been the best friends since high school.  It was such a great weekend of relaxing, eating and playing with the kids... the only reason we ever got dressed was to go out to eat.

Their little boy, Isaiah, is 6 weeks old and is absolutely the most perfect house guest imaginable- minimal crying and let me hold him whenever I wanted.  My boys took very well to the new baby... Zac was even quite concerned whenever Isaiah would cry- Zac would get frantic looking for a paci for the baby.

Our visit was short, but perfect... Can't wait for next year.
